Luka,

My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. As you may have heard already, the Rift upheaval in Chicago last month and the disappearance of a large number of people left the Organization temporarily without overarching leadership. Myself and Ms. Sandric, another faction head, have been working to deal with the changes within the company as a result of this.

Needless to say, Moscow has been a bit busier and more time-consuming than I had first anticipated. I can't say more than I have concerning the nature of the business, of course, but rest assured that we have this under control.

I'm glad to hear you found a way to be useful at the Conrad incident. Have you been keeping busy since? I trust Duncan gives you enough work to do?

Aaron

There's a black SUV cruising up and down Skid Row, Los Angeles. It's not a particularly large SUV, nor particularly clean, but it has been slowly moving around the neighborhood for some time now.

Arlin doesn't like this. It's one thing to follow what minor papertrail there is across a country, and quite another to do the actual searching by oneself. Of all the things he's had to do in his lifetime, this is one of the most tedious. Especially since while all their leads terminated at Skid Row, they didn't actually say much of anything about where Four might have been or what she might have been doing. Not that Arlin's really sure that would have helped all that much.

Also, he's never had to do this sort of thing whilst worrying that the small dinosaur in the backseat is going to decide to be a) a naked, half-sentient girl or b) a pteranodon. Sure, it's been quiet for awhile, and they've fed it, so maybe it will stay asleep, but there's always that nagging thought in the back of his head. He doesn't like having to take care of things -- pets, people, it doesn't matter.

After a bit of somewhat fruitless staring along the crowds, he sighs and swings the SUV over a bit, settling it into park and glancing over at Anka. "I don't suppose you've got any other ideas, aside from getting out and combing the street on foot?" he asks. "I don't relish the idea of taking the dinosaur out for a walk." Or leaving it in the car, though really, that might be the better option.

It's about 6:45 when a fairly nondescript SUV leaves Grand Junction, Colorado, heading west toward Las Vegas. Most people don't notice it among the other cars on the highway, and if they do, it's only because it's going slightly fast or because it's got Illinois plates rather than Colorado ones. This is pretty much the same as it's been for the past week, and this is exactly how Arlin likes it to be. Since Anka noticed Four was missing and they finally set off from Chicago, they've made fairly good time, considering the trail they're following is the kind that very, very rapidly goes cold. And Anka's just picked up the scent, as it were, and is insisting on Vegas. Since Arlin has turned up nothing of his own and Duncan can only remotely hack into so much, that's where they're going.

Arlin's actually glad to just get away from Chicago for awhile. He was beginning to feel like the place had become a kind of horrible little prison that was alternately one of the more boring places he'd lived and one of the more explosion-prone. Neither of which being something he enjoyed -- boredom he could deal with, but it called up unpleasant things and he dislikes mulling when he's expected to be working, even if it's just mundane jobs. So he's kind of relishing the chance to get away, even if the actual search is frustrating in and of itself. It's travel, something he was, until very recently, able to do with some regularity.

Traveling with a companion is not something he usually does, but he's finding that Anka's presence isn't nearly as grating as he was expecting it to be. Not that he's going to say as much, but at least it's there, and he's not being overly snippy with her. He's just driving, weaving a little too fast on the switchbacks through the mountains, and not really paying much attention to much else. It's almost relaxing, finally being away from Chicago, being on the move again, and now that they've left Grand Junction behind, being away from any kind of city.

It won't be very relaxing in a bit, but it's not like he knows that.
